Advocating for Library Outreach Services

Speakers: Sandy Littletree, Knowledge River
Connie Purcell, Hickory PL
Fatima Perkins, Towanda District Lib
Miguel Figueroa, Director of Office for Diversity, ALA

Presenters discussed the ALA toolkits that guide staff through the process of developing, promoting, and advocating for library outreach in various areas:

-The Small but Powerful Guide to Winning Big Support for Your Rural Library
-The Guide to Building Support for Tribal Libraries
-How to Serve the World @ Your Library
-Keys to Engaging Older Adults @ Your Library

These toolkits provide rules in the ongoing challenge of winning support for your library. Steps to success:

-Start now
-build your team
-make an action plan
-have a clear, memorable message
-target your audiences
-identify strategies
-practic word-of-mouth marketing
-have an enthusiastic, articulate spokesperons
-evaluate constantly
-don't stop

These toolkits can be downloaded at the ALA website. I plan to look at them more closely when I get back to the library. They sound like excellent resources to help us seek information, learn about trends and get more insight about the experiences of other libraries.
