Presenter: Sandra Sojanos and a panel of speakers.
This workshop was about the young professional demographic, in their 20s and 30s. This age group is underrepresented at public libraries. I've been learning a lot lately about how baby-boomers are underrepresented in libraries, but this younger demographic is also missing out, for many of the same reasons - they don't have young children and they don't feel that library programming meets their needs.
Some ways to appeal to this demographic include:
Zines, cult movies, cultural awareness, stand-up comedy, music, food, fashion, authors, true crime, local art, speed-dating, anything quirky and different.
Marketing and graphics are important, after-hours events are recommended, serving alcohol helps bring people in. They recommended reading the book "Generation Me" to learn more about this demographic.
