From NOT to HOT: Turning Your Unknown or Mediocre Library into the Happening Place in Your Community

Considering that the title of this workshop seemed a bit insulting, it shouldn't have been a big surprise to find it so disappointing. The presenter, a former library director and current consultant/trainer, Victoria Ashford, presented what seemed like very basic concepts (she spent a solid ten minutes explaining the concept of internal/external customers) in a condescending manner. Her nuggets of wisdom included not repairing library furniture with duct tape, making staff wear uniforms, and other eye-roll inducing comments, which she insisted we write down. Almost half the people in the room left early, including myself.

Despite the disappointment, it did make me stop and realize how good we are at what we do. It's good that these concepts are old news - it means we're smart and good at what we do. So I left feeling disappointed and uplifted at once.

  1. Well, if nothing else you got some great "what not to do during a presentation" ideas! Anything that makes the audience roll their eyes - not a good idea. But, I do agree with you about the reaffirmation - feels pretty good.

  2. That was hilarious! "nuggets of wisdom" - hehehehe. I hope there is not a lot fo duct tape repair out there (stuff is handy though)! Duct tape could look cool in a teen room!
