Speakers were from the San Jose Public Library. This program was proposed 18 months ago, and since then, their budget situation has dramatically changed.
Unfortunately their presentation was not significantly changed to reflect these budget cuts. Rather, they tended to focus just on how they do things in San Jose. I kept waiting to hear about if they implemented furloughs or layoffs or cutting back hours (and the rationale behind whatever they did) but they never got there.
Five years ago, San Jose Public really was a model for innovation in public libraries. I know we learned a lot from them (i.e merchandising, inviting public spaces) but now, they seem to be living in the past.
